History

In 1866 Champaran was made into a district with Motihari as its headquarters.On 1 December 1977, the Champaran district was divided into the districts of Purbi Champaran (East Champaran) and Paschimi Champaran (West Champaran). Motihari and Bettiah became headquarters of East Champaran district and West Champaran district respectively.The municipality of Motihari was established in 1879. Though no authentic data is available, one of the oldest structures in Motihari appears to be the Briksha Sthan Math, a temple of the guardian deity of Motihari, dating back to 1805. During the British era, the town flourished and it became one of the important centers in North Bihar. Mahatma Gandhi came to Champaran to see the condition of farmers who were forced by the British to cultivate indigo in place of food grains. He protested against the policy in which farmers were not able to get even own money which they spent during cultivation of Indigo.Later on,Mahahtma Gandhi started his satyagraha aandolan for indigo farmers against English.

Motihari is the headquarter of East Champaran district, a well known district in state of Bihar. Prior to 1st Dec 1977, there was a single district called "Champaran". After 1st Dec 1977, the district was divided into 2 parts called East Champaran and West Champaran (Purbi Champaran and Paschimi Champaran respectively). Bettiah became the headquarter of West Champaran and Motihari became headquarter of East Champaran.
Motihari is situated 165 KM away from Patna, which is capital city of Bihar and around 80 KM from Muzaffarpur which a well known city in Bihar. Muzaffarpur is famous for "Sudha Milk Dairy" and "Litchi".
Motihari is divided by a jheel called "Moti-Jheel". There is a bridge which connects both the parts of town. On this bridge there are open markets of cloths, fish, plastic items which are available at low cost. Meena Bazaar is a hub for all types of market, ie. electronics, cloths, kitchen items, fruits, vegetables etc.
